The Hands Behind the Work

Shubhangi works the way a portrait painter does — from the bones outward, and always in daylight first. A face is read before it is touched: where the light already falls, where it never will, and which of the two the day is going to be photographed in.

Her bridal work is the studio's longest sitting and its most argued-over. She builds in thin layers and tests each one under camera rather than under the mirror, on the principle that a look which only survives the studio has not actually been finished.

Sahil's discipline is subtraction. Grooming is judged at conversational distance, where there is nowhere for a soft edge to hide, so the work is measured in millimetres and in what has been left out rather than what has been added.

He came to the chair through barbering rather than through makeup, and it shows in the sequencing — structure settled before finish, never the other way around. It is the half of the practice that keeps the other half honest about edges.
